Bekaltal - Brahmatal Summitt
Brahmatal is known to be one of the most stunning and an adventurous place to explore. The amount of snow at the trek teases every trekker to take up the challenge. it is not difficult to scale, very few winter treks which can be done during Jan and Feb. Apart from forests, you get impressive views of Himalayas. In March the views are worth dying for! clear blue skies that stretch horizon to horizon. From Brahmatal Top, in every direction you see mighty Himalayan ranges. Brahmatal is known to be one of the most glorious, stunning and an adventurous place to explore in the Himalayas, The amount of snow at the trek teases every trekker to take up the challenge.
If you are in the mood for a picturesque but moderate trek, the Brahmatal Trek is the perfect mix of both. Nestled amidst the Himalayas and covered with blankets of snow, the Brahmatal trek proves to be challenging for a few trekkers. Very few winter treks can be done during Jan and Feb. The walk is mostly inside the jungle of conifer, Cedar, Oak and Fir which in itself is a soothing experience. Apart from forests, you get impressive views of Himalayas. The amazing views of some of the prominent seven thousanders visible are Trishul, Nandaghunti, Chowkhamba, Nilkanth, Kamet, Hathi and Ghoda peaks. An adventurous summitt climb in fresh powdery snow, and this becomes perfect peak winter trek! I enjoyed the over the snow and steep slopes. The trek is filled with beautiful landscapes and sprawling forests and a mesmerizing view of the Himalayas.

Day 1: HARIDWAR TO LOHAJUNG
Overnight Drive from Delhi, arrive at Haridwar Bus Stand early morning and drive to Lohajung, which will take approximately 9-10 hours. The route passes through many beautiful hill stations, few names like Rishikesh, Devprayag, Sri Nagar, Rudraprayag, KaranPrayag, Tharali, Deval. You drive alongside local rivers and get views of many peaks.
Arrive at your base camp, Lohajung by the evening. Its a small town, clustered village with very basic facilities availabe. We arrived in Lohajung by late afternoon & check into a guesthouse. Having dinner and overnight at Lohajung. If you fogot anything t carry, you can pick jackets, hand gloves, caps, shoes etc. from a local store at Lohajung. Delving deeper in the mythology, Lohajung is the place where goddess parvati had a jung (fight) with the demon Lohasur. Literally translated, Lohajung means ‘ fight with Lohasur ’.
Day 2: LOHAJUNG TO BRAHMATAL (OR KHABEKHAL)
After breakfast we start trek from Lohajung. Initially infollow the ascending human made stone trail and move gradually upwards through the forest interspersed by a few village houses. Mandoli Village, will reveal itself after a short trek. The well laid stone trail, passes through rhododendron trees and area surrounded with the oak forest to get to Bekaltal. During Winters This Trek Is Covered With Snow, you’ll spot Kail valley when you climb higher. The trail is also divided by a few local streams. There Is A Place Called Telindi Top. From This Place You Can View The Mighty Himalayan Ranges. Around 5 hours to reach pristine lake called Bekaltal, the trek is approximatly 8 kms. The lake of Bekaltal is surrounded by oak trees.
After short break at this forest is home to Monal, the state bird of Uttrakhand. We start moving towards Brahmatal basecamp, we proceed further through thick oak forests for about an hour or so after which there is a steep descent, we will reach today’s campsite Khabekhal (Brahmatal). It Is A Trail On A Mountain Ridge With Valleys On Both Sides. After half an hour snow patches started and its converted to thick snow area, it take longer to reach the destination.
After long strech of first day we finally reached base camp. If You Are Lucky Enough And If The Sky Is Clear You Will Have A Magnificent View Of The Complete Himalayan Range From This Trail. Very cold here in the months of winters but Fire, Camping and Sleeping bags will keep us warm during the night.
Day 3: BASECAMP TO BRAHMATAL SUMMITT
The day we finally climb to BrahmaTal Peak and return back Lohajung because of long sterch we need to pitch tent inbetween the way to Bekaltal to Lohajung. Approx. 2 hrs to reach the summitt. after spend few time on peak start back to the destination. start through the same forested trails passing by several mountain villages on the slopes. It offers splendid views of the mighty Himalayas peak Trishul and Nanda Ghunti and Ronti Saddle range. Never ending ridge lines, sprawling Bugiyals, High altitude lakes, majestic peak views and snow on the trail make it an compelling proposition for a winter trek.
Day 4: CAMPING AFTER KHOPARIYATAL
Today is an easy day to descent towards Lohajung through the other forested trails passing by several densce forest, villages on the slopes. Descend will take less time and the day is not that exhaustive. We return back to Lohajung and energy is back. Having breakfast with group and enjoy moment, Finally we depart towards Haridwar. We reach Haridwar at 6-7 pm and grab the buses to Delhi.
HOW TO REACH
BY TRAIN : From Delhi take Uttar Sampark Kranti OR Ranikhet Express for Kathgodam (Overnight Journey). From Dehardun take the Doon Express for Kathgodam (8hrs.journey).
BY ROAD : The journey from Lohajung-Rishikesh is two hours longer than from Lohajung-Kathgodam. Bus facility to Delhi is much better at Rishikesh-Haridwar than Kathgodam. From Rishikesh board the bus for Lohajung which starts from Rishikesh at 5 am in the morning and takes around 12/14 hrs to reach Lohajung. BACK Bus from Lohajung to direct Rishikesh in the morning. This will take around 10/12 hours. From Rishikesh there are regular transport to Haridwar and takes one hour.
BY ROAD : From Haldwani shared taxis are available for Deval early in the morning. Take such one by 6 am from Haldwani and reach Deval. Lohajung is another 25 Km from Deval. Either you can get a shared Jeep or need to reserve one.
WHAT ARE THE RISK INVOLVED ?
Acute Mountain Sickness(AMS): Shortness breath, Mild headache & Tiredness are some common in high altitude trek. Risk of being hit by AMS is considerably low but you are advised to be on a course of Diamox. In case of any medical emergencies, there are easy exit points on this trek, means evacuation will generally not take more than 24 hours.
HOW TO PREPARE FOR TREK
Prepration: Fight again sub-zero temperatures, carry multi layers throughout winter trek and practice carrying packed backpack to comfortable with it. Carrying dry fruits will help on trek since they provide instant energy. The ascent-descent during the trek demands level of fitness. Begin your fitness preparation, jogging 5 Km in 30 minute before One month or two before start the trek, stretching exercises for flexibility are important so you don’t get cramps in trek.
